It’s highly likely that while scouring the allergy aisle of your local pharmacy, you have never come across a yoga pamphlet. It turns out, though, that a few simple yoga poses may help reduce inflammation in the body, which could bring relief for the sinus inflammation caused by allergies.

Yoga Moves to Help Allergy Symptoms

According to recent articles, are many yoga poses that could help reduce inflammation, thus ease bad allergy symptoms, including but not limited to:

1. Alternate Nostril Breathing

Alternate nostril breathing is a common breath control practice in yoga. To participate, cover one nostril while breathing through the other for a count of 10 and then hold your breath for 5 seconds. Repeat while covering the other nostril and do entire set about three times. This type of breathing helps the body relax.

2. Downward Dog

For those of you with an allergy-induced stuffy head, you may think that doing downward facing dog sounds counterintuitive, not to mention painful. However, the action of standing up after completing downward dog helps the mucus drain from your sinuses. To begin downward facing dog, begin on all fours and then straighten your legs so that your bottom is in the air. Breathe for a count of 5 and then repeat several times. When finished, gradually walk your hands toward your feet and stand up slowly. Ideally, your sinus pressure will lessen upon returning to standing.

 Treatment for Chronic Sinusitis

If the sinus congestion and pressure caused by allergies is a chronic condition for you, you may actually need the help of a sinus expert. Babak Larian, MD, FACS, Director of the Center for Advanced Head  & Neck Surgery in Beverly Hills, is a specialist in the treatment of chronic sinusitis through minimally invasive endoscopic surgical techniques.

Two common sinusitis treatments are balloon sinuplasty and Targeted Endoscopic Sinus Surgery™. Balloon sinuplasty involves the careful placement of a small balloon in the blocked sinus where it is then inflated to open up the passageway and restore sinus drainage. Targeted Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, developed by Dr. Larian himself, is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that uses a thin endoscope to specifically target the problematic sinus and reestablish natural sinus function.
