Tinnitus is any sound you sense that others around you can’t hear. Most people with tinnitus, or commonly called ringing in the ears, report a high pitched buzzing sound or a sound described as a cricket noise. There are many causes, but the most common reason for tinnitus is excessive ear wax. Another very typical cause is a hearing loss. Hearing loss related tinnitus is most commonly seen in people over 50, but can occur at any age. We are seeing a lot more of it in younger people now due to loud music exposure through ear buds. Excessive sound over time causes a high frequency hearing loss, and the brain makes up for this by making its own high frequency sound, and that is the buzzing noise that is heard. If you have tinnitus, one of the first steps to take is an examination by an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. A hearing test may also be ordered. If it is due to wax impaction, clearing the wax should take care of it. If it is due to hearing loss, you will want to avoid further excessive noise or sound exposure. Many people say that they notice their tinnitus the most in a quiet room. If so, it helps to mask the ringing with low background sound. This may be a television, radio, water fountain, etc. The volume of the sound played in the background should be low. If falling asleep is difficult due to tinnitus, then setting a radio between stations on low volume will give you what is known as white noise. This can be very effective. Of course there are many more causes of tinnitus, and those as well as other ear, nose and throat topics will be covered later. If you need skin care products from a good pharmacy store I also advise you to visit some of the weekly ads of CVS.
